FAQs

Certified Translation for use in United Kingdom

Who can provide a Certificate of Accuracy for certified translations in the UK?

In England and Wales, authorities typically accept certified translations accompanied by a Certificate of Accuracy when provided by translators who are members of professional bodies, such as the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL).
I am a CIOL full member with MCIL designation, and my self-certified translations carry professional credibility and are often sufficient for most UK authorities.

Are there “publicly appointed and sworn translators” in the UK?

No, there are no publicly appointed and sworn translators in the UK. Unlike countries with civil law systems (e.g., Germany or Austria), which have sworn translators, the UK follows a Common Law system and does not have this concept. Instead, qualified translators, such as those with MCIL status from the CIOL, can provide certified translations accompanied by a Certificate of Accuracy. These are widely accepted by UK authorities.

Certified Translations

What is a "Certified True Translation"?
A certified true translation is a document translated from one language to another, stamped, signed, and certified by a qualified third party (a Certified Translator). It confirms to the receiving party that the translation is accurate, with the translator taking responsibility for its correctness.

Is a Certified True Copy (CTC) the same as a Certified True Translation or Certified Correct Translation/Sworn Translation?
No. A CTC is a duplicate (typically photocopied) of the original document, stamped, signed, and certified as a true copy by the certifier. While professionals like lawyers, accountants, or company secretaries can certify a CTC, only a Notary Public’s certification is generally recognized overseas. Some countries/authorities may also accept CTCs certified by a local Commissioner for Oaths.

Can a lawyer, company secretary, notary public, or commissioner for oaths provide a "Certified True Translation"?
No. Only a Certified Translator can provide a “Certified True Translation.”

What is a "Notarized Translation"?
A Notarized Translation is a translation performed by a translator and notarized by a Notary Public. The translator signs a declaration (affidavit) confirming that the translation accurately represents the original document.

What is a "Certified Translation"?
A Certified Translation is performed by a professional certified translator. Each page of the document is translated, stamped, or endorsed with an official seal (in Malaysia, by the ITBM – Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books or the MTA – Malaysian Translators’ Association, under the Institute of Language and Literature/Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka). Certified translations are guaranteed for quality, as the translator is certified by the relevant governing body.

What is a "Legalized Translation"?
A legalized translation is a translation authenticated by authorities such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Higher Education, or Ministry of Education. Typically, both the original document and its translation must be legalized. Most Embassies require legalized documents before endorsement for use in the destination country.
